Simple forms of stone lamps fueled with animal fat and using lichens, moss or juniper for a wick are in use. Construction of hearths in northern latitudes begins to improve; stone borders are arranged for heat retention and to direct air flow. Some hearths are even enclosed in clay walls and may have been used for baking food and other purposes.
