Middle Pleistocene humans control fire (burning wood). Direct evidence was found outside a cave at Chou k'ou-tien, China, where charcoal was found along with traces of a stone tool making industry in an open gully deposit that seems to be slightly older than the cave deposit itself (containing the bones of Homo Erectus).
