The Grand Rapids Electric Light and Power Co. was organized and created what some consider the first hydroelectric power plant to furnish arc lighting service in the United States. The first generating equipment was a 16-arc light brush generator (or dynamo) installed in the factory of the Wolverine Chair Company. The generator was driven by a waterwheel and supplied power to a theater and storefront illumination.
